Brexit: a fairy tale, a horror story, or both?

By George ILIEV
Brexit Metaphor No 109.

I was a Brexiteer when I was nine years old: I remember my mother getting concerned that I was only interested in reading fairy tales as I had not yet developed a taste for serious books.

Every good fairy tale has a horror story woven into it, which adds spice to the plot. However, until the 2016 EU referendum, I had never seen an entire horror story presented as a fairy tale: not in Arabian Nights, not in Grimm's Fairy Tales, not in Peppa Pig, not even in Horrid Henry. But then, who knew that the European Research Group was a fairy tale publisher. After all, Jacob Rees-Mogg wouldn't strike you as a capable ogre - rather as merely an "honourable member for the 18th century."
