Brexit is bird in the bush. EU membership is bird in the hand

By George ILIEV
Brexit Metaphor No 130

Brexit is the proverbial "bird in the bush" - not worth as much as the "bird in the hand", also known as EU membership.

There are linguistic studies on this proverb. Interestingly, it turns out that in more stable Europe, the ratio is 2:1 birds in the bush vs birds in the hand. However, in more unstable regions such as Latin America, the ratio goes up: a a bird in the hand is worth many more birds in the bush (or birds in the sky). In volatile Colombia, the proverb goes: "Más vale pájaro en mano, que ciento volando." (A bird in the hand is worth more than 100 in flight.)

Brexit is a recursive phenomenon: it is a promise for a brighter future ("bird in the bush") which ironically is creating more instability and is thus decreasing the value of the "bird in the bush". Promises and political talk are getting cheaper with the increase in the supply of birds fluttering in the bush which never actually get caught in the hand. Luckily, at least the bird in the hand is still in the hand until March 29, with the possibility of holding on to it for longer if Article 50 is delayed or cancelled.

Will Brexit Santa bring Brexit to naughty politicians?

By George ILIEV
Brexit Metaphor No 67

Santa Claus supposedly does not bring gifts to naughty children. The biggest gift for Brexiteers is Brexit, so they are eagerly awaiting. But will the Brexit Santa deliver on March 29, 2019? Or will the naughty Brexiteer politicians be exposed for their over-promising and truth-stretching?

Saint Nicholas was the 4th century Christian bishop from whom the Santa Claus tradition originates. Saint Nicholas lived in Anatolia. Would the Brexit politicians be happy with a gift from Anatolia instead, e.g. Syrian refugees sent for resettlement?

Brexit for a Global Britain unites three promises: Jam Tomorrow, Mañana, Inshallah!

By George ILIEV
Brexit Metaphor No 29

Michel Barnier tells a joke to Theresa May:
"How many Brexiteers does it take to change a light bulb? -
One to promise a brighter future and the rest to screw it up."

This is funny but unfortunately also very sad. Welcome to our oxymoronic world!
The unrealistic promises of Brexiteers can now come with global variations, worthy of a "Global Britain":

1. Jam Tomorrow (from Alice in Wonderland): you can have jam tomorrow and jam yesterday but never jam today. And it is always today when you ask for it. Have you seen anyone asking Donald Trump for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the USA these days?

2. Mañana, which in Spain and Latin America means not only tomorrow and later, but also years later. Britain is therefore going to enter into an FTA with all of Latin America mañana.

3. Inshallah! ("God willing" in Arabic): Muslims are required by the Quran to say this when speaking of future events. While non-Muslims say it to mean a 5% probability, give or take. More trade deals with the Gulf, Inshallah! (...though Saudi is currently a realistic prospect, give or take a murdered journalist.)

With all this in mind, it is important that UK citizens and residents should sign the "More United" petition: (https://www.moreunited.uk/real_brexit) which asks the British Government to carry out and publish an assessment of how the impact of the Brexit plan compares with the current EU membership of the UK. This petition is supported by Anna Soubry MP (Conservative) and Chuka Umunna MP (Labour).
