Brexit Metaphor No 87.
Article 50 is like a piece of clingfilm (plastic wrap): once you've used it to cover a bowl, if you take it off you cannot use the same piece of clingfilm again. Only a very skillful person can occasionally manage to fold away and reuse the same piece of clingfilm.
Article 50 is a single-use tool. Once triggered and in use, it can be scrapped but it cannot be taken off and put on again like a plastic lid. However, it can be stretched to cover an extra few months, just like clingfilm can be stretched to cover an extra inch of the porridge bowl.
